Sierra Leone’s Rap King Swadu just released her debut album, “Freetown The Recipe“, which doesn’t leave its best until last.
The album starts with “Baddest In Town“, followed by “The Recipe”, a personal and heartfelt disclosure that eschews Swadu’s trademark rap skills coupled with a melancholic melody to suit her thoughtful and measured narration. This is the introduction to her story: The Baddest Female Rapper In Africa.
“And I’ve been asking myself, where they supposed to fit me in?” she begins, before laying into every spiteful hater she’s had to step over to get to the top. “Wake up this time i do what’s best for me, my life my goals my dreams my destiny“. And as her fury builds, and her words cut like the “sword of conan” as a verbal weapon, the beat quickens and the 808s come out.
Freetown The Recipe is a 13 track album which blends hiphop, rap and afrobeats. It features the likes of Timaya, Ice Prince, Buckwylla, Sheik Kargbo, Magnito and Juwhiz.
Her single off the album Bout The Money already has a video out and is making waves all over the continent.
Swadu has one of the wildest ascents of any woman in the music industry. Following her education in the United States of America, she’s a blend of the hip hop culture and African flavor.
“It was a struggle to proudly be African in school. African youths are often teased and lose their identity trying to fit in“, she disclosed.
She also added, “As an adult, I use music and poetry to blend both cultures. The Africa and America in me“.
She also hopes her music inspires young Africans especially girls in diaspora to Dream and reach for the stars. “It’s Cool to be African” is her campaign. With her music, she’s hoping to reach out to prestigious platforms promoting black excellence to showcase her talent, tell her story and empower the African Diaspora.
